The exhibition will display more than 300 pieces (groups) of various representative works of Zhang Guangyu's paintings, designs, illustrations, comics, furniture, animations, etc., including "Folk Love Songs", "Journey to the West", "The Monkey King" etc. A museum-level artistic and humanistic treasure house has been constructed, fully presenting the era, art and life of this master of the 20th century. This exhibition is also the first time that Zhang Guangyu's work has been fully exhibited in Shanghai.
Zhang Guangyu is one of the founders of the modern Chinese comic movement. He also has deep attainments in arts and crafts, publishing, design, animation, and art education. He is an important art activist and publisher in modern China. His art activities in the complicated times are a clue to the study of the history of modern Chinese culture before 1949. He is a pioneer of Chinese decorative painting, Chinese modern design, and Chinese animation industry. He has made great achievements in those fields of arts. Although he completed the transition and extension from modernist art to post-modernist art, the changes in the trend of the times and the premature death of individuals did not allow him to be in the public eye. At the same time, due to past misunderstandings of modern art, so he is also unknown in the history of modern Chinese art.
The theme of this exhibition is "Chinese Modernism". On the one hand, it tries to look back on the development path of Chinese modernism from the cultural perspective of modernism, and presents Chinese-style modernism with an academic outlook facing the world and the future. The creation marks the artistic achievement of Zhang Guangyu and reveals the brilliance of this obscured Chinese modernist artist. On the other hand, we also hope to reinterpret Zhang Guangyu and his era through this exhibition, and reassess his position in the history of art and his value and significance to Chinese modernist art and culture. The exhibition is divided into seven themes, presenting Zhang Guangyu’s artistic creation and historical status in a diversified and three-dimensional manner, namely: maritime style, new sound of the times, art warrior, Chinese Bauhaus, Oriental Disney, New China art designer, and Guangyu style.
