Although Zhong Kui has not been recorded in the official history, he is a legendary hero well-known to every family.
During the Song Dynasty, the folks would hang up the "Image of Zhong Kui Catching Ghosts" at the start of the year to ward off evil spirits. Later, the image of Zhongkui was used during Dragon Boat Festival in May, and Zhongkui’s function was changed from mainly eliminating ghosts to eliminating five poisons. Since then, Zhong Kui has been favored by painters of the past, not only has the meaning of "shielding evil and receiving good fortune", but has also become one of the themes for painters to embed loneliness and arrogance in the chest after the Yuan Dynasty, and has even been incorporated into the traditional Chinese auspicious patterns.
Pu Ru is good at painting Zhong Kui, and his works are full of imaginative and interesting shapes. From the rich collection of Pu Ru calligraphy, this special exhibition selects more than ten works of Zhong Kui themes, either upright and majestic, or simple and cute, witty and small, showing the unique charm of Puru calligraphy and the love of the literati.
