Kwan S Wong is an internationally acclaimed connoisseur of Chinese painting and calligraphy as well as a master calligrapher. Born in 1934, he received his education in Hong Kong, Japan, and the United States. In 1981, he joined Christie’s New York, where he established the department of Chinese painting and calligraphy, serving as its head until his retirement in 1997. Following his retirement, Wong was appointed senior consultant for Chinese painting and calligraphy at Sotheby’s Hong Kong from 1999 to 2001.

Throughout his illustrious career, Wong has held numerous solo calligraphy exhibitions at prestigious venues, including the Beijing Art Museum, Shanghai Art Museum, Guangdong Museum, and Hong Kong City Hall. He takes masters of the Jin and Tang dynasties as his principal models in calligraphy, while also referencing the expressiveness of Song and Ming period works. Specializing in running-cursive and small regular scripts, he is particularly renowned for his expressive cursive writing. Additionally, Wong studied painting under the guidance of Li Yanshan, which made him an accomplished painter of bamboo and landscapes.

To celebrate Kwan S Wong’s 90th birthday in 2024, the Long Museum is proud to present a retrospective exhibition of his work.
