Puru (a.k.a Pu Xinyu, 1896-1963), born in Beijing, originally named Aisin Gioro•Puru and courtesy named Xinyu, was a member of the Manchu Aisin Gioro clan, the ruling house of the Qing Dynasty. Being a grandson of Yixin, Prince Gong and a cousin to Puyi, the final ruler of the Qing Dynasty and last Emperor of China, Puru was accomplished in both painting and calligraphy, poetry and literature. He was reputed to be as talented as the maestros Chang Dai-chien and Wu Hufan for highly skilled in Chinese traditional painting, featuring in figure, flower, calligraphy as well as landscape in particular.
Inherited the legitimism of traditional painting and based on precise techniques of landscape painting, Puru flexibly made his own innovation and pioneered with an individual style, among which, the highly elegant and freely natural atmosphere in his painting and calligraphy are particularly most admirable.
This solo exhibition will mainly present Puru’s selected painting and calligraphy works at various periods from collections of Long Museum. It is a comprehensive retrospection to this Chinese-painting maestro and meanwhile is in purpose of further strengthening his important position in the art history of modern painting in China.
