In this panel discussion, we will discuss Louise Bourgeois, one of the world's most important artists, and her unique artistic language and life story.

Bourgeois was born in Paris, France in 1911, and died in New York in 2010. At the age of 98, her creativity was still going strong. All her work comes out of her powerful and uncontrollable emotions. The pain she tried to escape became the driving force and source of her artistic creation. Like the knotting and stitching of a fabric, she sublimates the pain of life into a work of art.

The pain and emotions that originated from the beginning of life did not dissipate over time, though they did gradually become transformed into precious memories. Bourgeois captured it in an artistic way until it was identified, expressed, confirmed, and loved. Like her.

As the curator of the exhibition, Philip Larratt-Smith, has said: When I think of Bourgeois, I sometimes think of Sartre's evaluation of Baudelaire - she has a talent for suffering.

In this forum we will explore the painful value of art and artists. Bourgeois once said: Pain is the ransom of formalism.

The intimate relationship she was unable to reconcile in her life. Her courage coexists with her pain.

With the eternal thread Bourgeois unfolds her life. The unravelled and unresolved problems in life are like knots in the thread. It is to treat and to close the wounds of life, like a suture. It is during this process that her art is born.

Guest Speakers: Xiang Jing

As one of the most important contemporary artists in China, 21 years of Xiang Jing’s work is a unique perspective to view the transformation in contemporary Chinese art. Xiang’s artwork reveals a sense of insecurity through which the misty nature of the modern human character and life itself are accentuated and reified. Xiang Jing seeks after the existential truth of life through her continued investigation of “internality” of human nature in her work. Xiang Jing’s work practice is problem-oriented. Within the gradually marginalized realist sculpting language framework, Xiang Jing has made idiosyncratic and influential contemporary experiments. She shapes each of her sculptures into individual appearance and characters, hand-paints her sculptures in many layers, and chooses fiberglass as her principle material.
