Park Seo-Bo (Korean, b. 1931)
Park Seo-Bo was born in South Korea in 1931. He graduated with a B.A in painting from Hong-Ik University in Seoul in 1954. After becoming the dean of the College of Fine Arts there in 1973, he was further awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in 2000. Park is regarded as a leading figure in contemporary Korean art and is a recipient of the Korean Silver Crown Cultural Medal in 2011 as well as the Asia Arts Game Changer Award in 2018. He is also credited as being the father of the Dansaekhwa (“monochrome painting”) movement. Park’s renowned “Ecriture” series first began in the late 1960s. As a series of paintings, they are intricately linked to notions of time, space, and material.
